Ohioans care deeply about their sports at every level and have some of the oldest professional sports franchises in the country. At the high school level, the state has a top-five list of schools that pay homage to the past with the best vintage logos, which are creative and stand out from the rest of Ohio. Three other schools have more popular nicknames with retro-looking emblems, placing them just outside the top five.

Top Five

The best vintage logos in Ohio feature special characters that creatively represent their schools. Along with the school nicknames, these logos build a brand that differentiates them from other schools across the state.
  • Barberton High School Magics (Barberton, OH)
    • Description: The Barberton High School emblem is a cartoon magician with a top hat, monocle, cape, and wand, embodying the school's mascot, the Magics, and displaying a giant "B" on its chest to represent the school name.
    • Opinion: The logo of the Magician embodies everything a great vintage logo should have, including an enchanting nickname like the Magics, detailed elements, and an old-school feel.

  • Ellet Community Learning Center Orangemen (Akron, OH)
    • Description: The Ellet Orangemen logo features an orange with human characteristics, including a face, arms, and legs, and an orange and navy hat with an "E" for Ellet.
    • Opinion: Almost identical to the iconic Syracuse Orange mascot ‘Otto the Orange,’ Ellet uses a cartoon orange with an "E" on its hat to make it their own as the face of their brand.

  • Fremont Ross High School Little/Lady Giants (Fremont, OH)
    • Description: The logo shows a muscular figure with the physique of a bodybuilder and the face of a baby, representing the school nicknames, the Little Giants, and the Lady Giants for athletics at Fremont Ross High School.
    • Opinion: The Fremont Ross logo stands out as one of the best due to its interesting design, featuring a strong-looking character whose attire and name represent the Little Giants and Lady Giants.

  • John Glenn High School Muskies (New Concord, OH)
    • Description: The logo of John Glenn High School presents a fish known as a Muskie with arms, the school's mascot, which the nearby Muskingum University Fighting Muskies inspired.
    • Opinion: It's not often a school uses a fish, specifically a musky, as their mascot and the logo enhances the nickname with its intimidating look of a fierce expression and arms in a fighting motion.

  • John Marshall High School Lawyers (Cleveland, OH)
    • Description: John Marshall High School in Cleveland, Ohio, named after the founding father and lawyer John Marshall, has a mascot called the Lawyers, represented by a logo of a cartoon figure holding a law book with an "M" on its chest.
    • Opinion: A lawyer is an unusual mascot for sports teams, but the historical connection to the school name and the logo's portrayal of tough Lawyers make it one of the best in the state.

Honorable Mentions

The few honorable mentions in Ohio were among the best-looking but just missed the cut. These schools had more common nicknames, but their vintage logos boosted their brands.
  • Norwalk High School Truckers (Norwalk, OH)

  • Ravenna High School Ravens (Ravenna, OH)

  • Massillon Washington High School (Massillon, OH)
