Michigan is home to two prominent state universities, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, each with some of the coolest vintage logos in college athletics. The high schools in the state also have a combo of vintage logos and creative nicknames, making them a few of the most memorable across the country.

Top Five

Throughout Michigan, the top five best vintage logos featured a variety of school nicknames, some of which were created by the schools and others that were less common.
  • Dexter High School Dreadnaughts (Dexter, MI)
    • Description: The old Dexter High School logo, a vintage cartoon battleship known as a dreadnaught with a smirk and biceps, was eventually updated to a more modern design.
    • Opinion: Before modernizing its brand, Dexter High School had one of the best vintage logos in the country, because of the cartoon battleship that embodied everything a retro logo should.

  • Edwardsburg High School Eddies (Edwardsburg, MI)
    • Description: The Edwardsburg High School teams are called the "Eddies," a shortened, familiar form of the town's name, Edwardsburg, giving the teams a community-centric identity, with their logo featuring a character to represent the Eddies.
    • Opinion: Naming the mascot after the town is unique, and having an emblem that represents the community with a man in an orange and blue outfit featuring a giant 'E' adds a memorable touch.

  • Houghton High School Gremlins (Houghton, MI)
    • Description: The Houghton High School Gremlins logo features a mischievous gremlin with large eyes, pointed ears, and a sharp-toothed grin, dressed in black, orange, and white with an elf-like outfit.
    • Opinion: The Houghton High School Gremlin logo is one of the best because it gives the vibe of the Cleveland Browns' elf emblem, with its similar colors and character type, a fan favorite in the NFL.

  • Manchester High School Flying Dutchmen (Manchester, MI)
    • Description: The Manchester High School Flying Dutchmen logo is simple but effective, featuring a shield emblem with a pair of winged Dutchmen shoes to represent the school's mascot.
    • Opinion: The symbol for Manchester High School may not be the most vibrant or eye-catching, but the pair of shoes with wings captures people's attention due to its shield design and the name accompanying it.

  • West Iron County High School Wykons (Iron River, MI)
    • Description: The mascot of West Iron County High School is called "Westy," a three-legged mythological creature created by the faculty and named by the students, combining elements of various animals to be the face of the school.
    • Opinion: Seeing the logo for the first time raises many questions and curiosity about its origins, and the story behind the design adds even more depth, making it one of the best in the state.

Honorable Mentions

Michigan had many schools with the same mascot names, including the nickname 'Comets,' which often featured vintage-style logos, unlike the others. Along with the Comets, two schools from the same town had similar, made-up nicknames with old-school logos to represent them.

  • Comets:
    • Coloma High School Comets (Coloma, MI)

    • Grand Ledge High School Comets (Grand Ledge, MI)

    • Jonesville High School Comets (Jonesville, MI)

  • Zeeland:
    • Zeeland East High School Chix (Zeeland, MI)

    • Zeeland West High School Dux (Zeeland, MI)
