In New Jersey, local pride runs deep, with many high schools drawing inspiration from their regional heritage, resulting in some of the most memorable logos in the state. This blog highlights the top five vintage logos, each notable for its name and character, along with a few honorable mentions that feature iconic faces embodying the classic design.

Top Five

The top five high school vintage logos reflect a deep connection to their local communities. While famous alumni, including professional athletes, actors, politicians, and other notable figures, didn't directly impact the rankings, they added to each school's legacy.

  • Eastside High School Ghosts (Paterson, NJ)
    • Description: The purple and orange logo features a ghost mascot in the center, with "Eastside" above and "Ghosts" across it, originating from the location of Eastside's football field, formerly a nineteenth-century cemetery.
    • Opinion: The school, rich in history and notable alumni, has a mascot and logo with historical significance tied to the land it occupies, creating a meaningful emblem that most schools don't have.

  • Moorestown High School Quakers (Moorestown, NJ)
    • Description: The neon yellow and black logo, featuring a person standing next to a giant "M" for Moorestown, represents the Quakers, who established the first school in the New Jersey town.
    • Opinion: Multiple schools nationwide have the mascot name the Quakers however Moorestown separates itself from the rest because of its neon yellow instead of normally going with red, white, and blue.

  • Verona High School Hillbillies (Verona, NJ)
    • Description: The emblem for the Verona High School Hillbillies features a man known as a hillbilly lying with a dog and a fishing pole, symbolizing the community's rural area and countryman character.
    • Opinion: The Hillbilly is a classic logo featuring a man and his dog, which makes for a memorable design due to the school’s nickname and the tradition behind the emblem.

  • Vineland High School Fighting Clan (Vineland, NJ)
    • Description: The mascot, Rowdy Rooster, stands in an intimidating pose, wearing a gray sweater with a "V" for Vineland, representing the high school Fighting Clan, named in honor of the community's chicken farming history.
    • Opinion: The Mighty Chicken's design, combined with the unique school nickname "Fighting Clan," makes it stand out as one of the best, if not the best, vintage logos in New Jersey.

  • Willingboro High School Chimeras (Willingboro, NJ)
    • Description: The Willingboro Chimeras are named after a mythical Greek creature, with the school's logo showing the body of a lion, the head of a goat, and the tail of a snake.
    • Opinion: The mythical creature gives Willingboro a distinct mascot that, although most people may not recognize it, captivates with its interesting and cool design compared to other basic high school mascots.

Honorable Mentions

The schools that were honorable mentions for New Jersey have faces of their brand that fit the vintage style but because of the strong top five missed the ranking.
  • Audubon High School Green Wave (Audubon, NJ)
  • Bordentown Regional High School Scotties (Bordentown, NJ)
  • Phillipsburg High School Stateliners (Phillipsburg, NJ)
