Though Mississippi has a smaller population and fewer high schools than many states, it has a tradition of creative mascots and logos. While multiple schools share the 'Rebels' mascot, inspired by the University of Mississippi, a few others stood out with vintage logos that are among the best—not just in Mississippi, but anywhere in the country.

Top Five

Three of Mississippi's top five vintage logos may differ in branding, but they all share one common trait: outstanding vintage designs paired with unique nicknames. These schools are recognized for having some of the best logos in the country.

  • St. Stanislaus Catholic High School Rock-A-Chaws (Bay St. Louis, MS)
    • Description: A red and black spiked ball with a giant grin serves as the mascot of St. Stanislaus Catholic High School, the Rock-A-Chaws, a name derived from an old Choctaw word for 'devil grass,' referring to the sand burrs that once grew on campus.
    • Opinion: The St. Stanislaus Catholic High School Rock-A-Chaws logo stands out as one of the best in the country due to its name and design, setting it apart with a combination of creativity and originality that no other school has.

  • Stone High School Tomcats (Wiggins, MS)
    • Description: The white and black striped cat, dressed in a blue sweater with an 'S' on its chest for Stone, stands over the word 'Tomcats,' representing the school's nickname.
    • Opinion: Unlike most schools with common mascots like wildcats, tigers, or lions, Stone High School set itself apart by creating a unique, vintage logo brand featuring the Tomcats as their mascot.

  • Taylorsville High School Tartars (Taylorsville, MS)
    • Description: The Taylorsville High School Tartars logo features a fierce warrior in green and yellow, wielding a curved sword and a black shield, with a stern expression, helmet, and the letters "THS" on his chest.
    • Opinion: The Tartar's mascot is a special emblem due to its eye-catching design, warrior type character, and rarely-used nickname, making it one of the most memorable logos for a high school.

Mississippi is passionate about college sports, largely due to the absence of professional teams. The Ole Miss Rebels are among the most popular teams that people in Mississippi support. At the high school level, 13 schools named the Rebels, including George County High School, home to Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele, the pride of Lucedale, Mississippi. Additionally, Harrison Central High School, known as the Red Rebels, brings the total number of rebel-related nicknames to 14.
