Maryland is known for its maritime history, iconic Chesapeake Bay, and a strong sense of community, extending into the state's high school sports, where teams embrace local traditions, forging a deep connection between athletics and regional pride. In a state filled with private schools, the top five vintage logos come from public high schools that have built their brands around their communities, creating memorable and distinct identities.

Top Five

Maryland's best vintage logos feature a variety of unique animals rarely seen as high school mascots. In contrast, others draw inspiration from the state’s local culture, creating a truly special brand identity.

  • Crisfield High School Crabbers (Crisfield, MD)
    • Description: Crisfield High School’s logo features a purple crab, symbolizing the Crabbers and representing the region’s crab culture and the town famously known for its Atlantic blue crab.
    • Opinion: The crab is an uncommon mascot, but it's perfect for the Crisfield High School Crabbers, who proudly embrace their state and community's crab industry, making their logo special.

  • International High School at Largo Sea Turtles (Largo, MD)
    • Description: An old-school sea turtle features as the logo for International High School at Largo, in a blue-green shade with what appears to be a world map on its shell, along with the school's name.
    • Opinion: While it may seem like just a regular sea turtle, the details in the logo make it stand out with its old-school feel, especially the world map design on the character's back, which ties into the identity of the International High School.

  • North Hagerstown High School Hubs (Hagerstown, MD)
    • Description: North Hagerstown High School's main mascot logo is a man holding a rifle, filled with the Maryland flag design, positioned between the letters 'NH,' while the school's baseball program uses a baseball-headed figure in a uniform, also standing next to 'NH.
    • Opinion: The nickname Hubs is unique on its own for North Hagerstown High School, and the primary logo incorporating the Maryland flag adds a nice touch, while the baseball team’s emblem features a retro-style character reminiscent of the classic Cincinnati Reds figure.

  • Southern Garrett High School Rams (Oakland, MD)
    • Description: Southern Garrett High School’s Rams logo has a simple yet classic design, with the old-style ram’s face in the center of a red circle, the school’s primary color.
    • Opinion: The Ram may seem simple, but sometimes less is more, as the mascot's head alone creates an effective, vintage logo that stands out among other schools in the state.

  • Sparrows Point High School Pointers (Sparrows Point, MD)
    • Description: Sparrows Point High School's Pointers logo shows a pointer dog, embodying alertness and readiness, with its stance serving as a play on words with the school's name.
    • Opinion: The Pointers mascot is a clever play on words for Sparrows Point High School, with the iconic image of the dog staring off into the distance, reflecting a pointer dog known for its strong hunting instincts.

Honorable Mentions

While the top five vintage logos came from public schools, Maryland is also home to many private institutions. Among the honorable mentions, three private schools stood out with some of the best vintage logos.

  • Sandy Spring Friends School Wildebeests (Sandy Spring, MD)

  • The Gunston School Herons (Centreville, MD)

  • The Worcester Prep Mallards (Berlin, MD)
